Development activity intended for...
Newly Qualified Teachers, Graduate Trainees and those teachers in their second year of teaching in primary schools who are not geography specialists or had much geography input during their training.
 
Aim of development activity...
This day will provide an introduction to teaching geography in the primary school for those with very little experience in the subject.
 
The objectives of the development activity are...
to bring geography alive for teachers; to try out a range of practical activities which can be used in the classroom; to explore the requirements of National Curriculum geography and looking forward to opportunities within the new Primary Curriculum.
 
Outline of learning methods
There will be a mix of tutor led discussions and small group activities. There may be a short practical session outside (depending on the weather!)
 
Additional information
There may be an outdoor element to this course, come prepared for a walk in the locality.

Kate Russell is Senior Adviser for Geography; she is a former middle school geography teacher and has broad experience in geographical education. She is editor of the Staffordshire Learning Net for Geography www.sln.org.uk/geography
